A 2024 City of Austin zoning case file (1700 South Lamar) quotes Land Development Code Subchapter E, Article 2, section 2.5, Exterior Lighting. As quoted, it says parking lots, pathways, product display areas and building overhangs and open canopies must be lit by fully shielded or full cut-off fixtures. Buildings may be lit by those fixtures only to highlight specific architectural features, and directional lights for signs and flagpoles must be aimed so they do not shine directly onto neighbouring property or roadways.

The quoted text asks building plan applications to describe the lighting fixtures, and says nothing about seasonal strings, so we are not saying it does or does not apply to them. An excerpt in a case file is also not the current code. Ask your landlord, property manager or the city.

The city’s Zilker Holiday Tree is 155 feet tall, with 39 streamers and 3,309 lights. The city lists its 2026 season as November 29 to January 1, with the lighting ceremony on Sunday, November 29, 2026, at 6 p.m. Our installs start October 20, and takedown comes after New Year’s. That is before the city’s tree season opens.

Installs and takedowns happen outside business hours, so your doors stay open and the lot stays clear. The National Weather Service puts Austin’s average first freeze on December 1 (1991 to 2020) and says late winter brings gusty northerly winds behind cold fronts. After takedown the lights are boxed and packed for you to keep, because Pratt does not store lights.
