Do I need approval first in Hyde Park or another Austin historic district?
Austin has local historic districts, and they are not the same thing as a National Register listing. Community Impact reported in August 2018 that the local districts were Hyde Park, Castle Hill, Harthan, Mary Street, Aldridge Place and Smoot/Terrace Park. It said a National Register listing does not bring tight land-use rules, while a local district does. The city may have added districts since, so check the current list.
For designated landmarks and local historic districts, the city’s Historic Landmark Commission reviews certificates of appropriateness against the applicable historic design standards. An application needs a public hearing, and the Commission can approve, deny or postpone it. Hyde Park’s single-family houses include Tudor Revival, Queen Anne and Bungalow styles.
We did not find a rule that says whether a roofline track needs that review, so we are not going to guess. Ask the city’s historic preservation staff before you book. Then text the address and tell Pratt the house is in a local district. The permanent lighting FAQ lists what else to ask.
Does my Austin HOA have to say yes?
It can. The Fairways at Steiner Ranch, a community association in Austin 78732, says exterior modifications or improvements should be approved through its architectural control process, with requests submitted through TownSq. Your own covenants are the only answer that counts for your street.
Read your documents or ask your association before you book. Get the approval in writing. When you request a quote, mention that an association is involved. The quote is free and is priced for the property, not from a list.
How do Austin’s heat, hail and freezes fit with lights that stay up all year?
The National Weather Service says normal highs at Camp Mabry reach 90 degrees by May 26 and stay above 90 until September 23. Early August is the peak, with normal highs in the upper 90s and lows in the mid-70s. January is the coldest month, with normal highs in the low 60s and normal lows in the low 40s. Sub-freezing temperatures come about 12 days a year at Camp Mabry and 33 at Bergstrom.
The same NWS summary says Austin’s severe weather season is mostly March through May, and that large hail and strong winds are the main threats. It also records 6.4 inches of snow on February 14 and 15, 2021. Anything fixed to an Austin roofline sits through all of that, so it is a fair thing to ask Pratt about when you text.
Permanent lighting is installed spring through fall, never during the holiday season. Bookings pause from October 20 to January 15 and reopen January 16, well before the normal highs reach 90 in late May. Text to join the list any time, and read more on the permanent lighting page.
What if I rent, or my business leases its building?
If you rent, or your business leases its building, the property owner has to agree before anything is fixed to the roofline. Get that yes first, in writing.
Then text the street address and what you want the lights to do. The system is a slim white or black track that stays up all year, with warm white, colours and patterns set from a phone app over WiFi.

Austin questions
Can I put permanent lights on a house in Hyde Park or another Austin historic district?
Maybe, but ask the city first. Austin’s Historic Landmark Commission reviews certificates of appropriateness in local historic districts against the historic design standards. We did not find a rule that names roofline track, so ask the city’s historic preservation staff, then text 361‑522‑5552.
Do permanent roofline lights work with an HOA in Austin?
That depends on your HOA’s covenants. Some associations send exterior changes through architectural review, as the Fairways at Steiner Ranch does. Get approval in writing before you book. The quote is free: text the address to 361‑522‑5552.
How much do permanent lights cost in Austin?
Every quote is priced for the property, and the quote is free. There is no price list. Text your address to 361‑522‑5552 and describe the roofline, and Pratt will come back with a price for your house or building.
Can permanent lights stay up through an Austin summer and winter?
They stay up all year, with nothing to take down or store. The National Weather Service puts early August normal highs in the upper 90s and January normal lows in the low 40s, and severe weather season mostly March through May. Ask Pratt about your roofline when you text.
When can I book permanent lights in Austin?
Permanent installs run spring through fall and never during the holiday season. Bookings pause October 20 to January 15 and reopen January 16. Text 361‑522‑5552 any time to join the list, and Pratt will tell you what the timing looks like for your address.
Can I change the colours through the year?
Yes. The lights run from a phone app over WiFi, with warm white, colours and patterns for every season. Nothing goes up or comes down when you change them, because the track stays on the roofline all year.
